A walk along the river as the first spring sun begins to melt winter’s mantle of ice, or a summer visit to an Adirondack lake provide some of the themes in Dorothy Englander’s current paintings. While she has always used photographs for reference, in 2003 she began using a digital camera, creating a virtual image library of her walks, travels, and adventures. She records the essence of her experiences and her emotional response to nature, weather, and the formal elements of the landscape. Digitally manipulating an image leads to a transformation in color, values, and proportions that suggests a refined, yet fanciful composition.
