ART FROM ABRAHAM LUBELSKI

In the vein of the likes of Urs Fischer at the Whitney Biennial last year, artist Abraham Lubelski has recently taken to destroying a wall or two in the name of art and political message. The iconography Lubelski etched into the sheetrock of his NY Arts Beijing Space studio is unmistakable in both its references and its implications. Here, set above some rubble, some rotting food, dead flies, feces, money and a credit card, a curious mixture of religious and secular imagery makes for some food for thought. Incorporated into the wall etching by Lubelski is a Buddha figure, a Christian cross, a Star of David, a heart and a secular star. Upon viewing the work, one cannot help but to ask: ?Can all of these elements exist in this space together peacefully??

Lubelski does not offer up any answer or solution to this issue, but instead references these various combinations of belief and economic systems from across the ever-increasing connectivity of the globe (represented by the world music playing and the presence of the artist?s own internet-ready laptop and slideshow of search engine-located iconographic images) as sources of contemporary violence and conflict by creating the impression of bullet holes in the wall that features these complex symbols of faith, belief, economy and higher meaning. In this way, Lubelski here creates a microcosm of our modern world within the terms of its current conflicts, beliefs, wastes, economies, decay and even its technologies. All in the corner of a single room.
