    AMY COHEN BANKER

For me, painting is a medium of expression capable of communicating profound visual experiences solely through its own elements: color and structure. Color and light are rich and important features of our experience of the world and of our inner life. The task of structure in my work is to create a framework of possibilities for expressive color.

A painting of mine may be inspired by something I have seen or be the outcome of an abstract process. More often, it is a combination of both. I usually work in series characterized by specific compositional ideas and methods.

My work is process-oriented and I experiment with compositional procedures that use a variety of kinds of information to generate structure. Many works combine layers of unrelated compositional material. Both music and architecture have been important influences on my working methods.

My new paintings explore and mitigate the grief process that is common to many of us. It results in an effort to express abundance and joy with love.
