    Thursday, December 4

Thursday morning began with a mini tanning session on the beach followed by a plunge in the surprisingly cold water. Afternoon activities included a talk by critic, Jerry Saltz at “Art Conversations”. His discussion of the impending doom of the financial crisis on the art market and the ways it might just renew actual experimentation and creativity in the art world was both sobering and refreshing. Later, we headed back to “Art Positions”, a collection of shipping containers housing art installations. On a stage in the middle, we watched Jordon Wolfson’s disappointing spoken word performance, which was presented as a part of “Art Perform”.

After exploring the delightful containers, we hopped a cab and headed downtown to the reception at MAM, the Miami Art Museum, where under the shadow of an enormous Jeff Koons silver rabbit balloon hovering above us, we sipped Cachaça and mingled. The museum is lovely, and the Chantal Ackerman show surveying her numerous video installations currently on view there was really quite impressive. A hop, skip, and a jump (and a $40 cab ride later), we were back in South Beach, our new friend “Ella” the up-and-coming South African singer in tow. Bluffing our way into the Benicio del Toro “Che Guevara” film release party at the Raleigh, we mingled with Benicio’s entourage as he smoked Cuban cigars and chatted up the numerous young blondes encircling him.
